MNLC is looking for articles for newcomer magazine

Are you an Internationally Trained Journalist or Writer?
Are you passionate about newcomers having a voice and working for change?
Would you like to see your work published this spring?
Be part of the New Voices team!

New Voices is a community-based advocacy publication of the Mennonite New Life Centre of Toronto that features articles written by internationally trained journalists and immigrant writers living in Toronto. The publication explores advocacy themes of relevance to immigrant and refugee communities, while at the same time providing an opportunity for newcomer journalists/writers to publish their work in Canada.

In 2009, New Voices focused on issues of poverty, employment and social change, examined from the perspectives of newcomers themselves. Eight internationally-trained journalists/writers have published articles in New Voices, contributing to public awareness of the experience and concerns of immigrants and refugees. New Voices has been distributed through provincial and national umbrella organizations to a broad audience, including newcomer communities and community service agencies, unions and church groups, academic researchers and politicians.

The third issue of New Voices will be devoted to the theme of Civic Participation and Newcomer Voices. How are newcomers making their voices heard? How are they participating as voters and candidates in elections? How are they organizing their communities and neighbourhoods to push for social change? If you have something to say about this topic, please send us a story. We welcome submissions that use different styles and genres. All submissions must be in English and be between 700-800 words. We will select 5 submissions for publication, looking for diverse perspectives on issues related to civic engagement, community organizing and the political participation of newcomer communities in Canada.

The selected journalists/writers will work together with a professional editor and the New Voices creative team to strengthen their writing and put together a high quality publication. New Voices is a valuable capacity-building initiative for newcomer journalists/writers who wish to reflect on advocacy concerns and see their work published. Participants will receive a small honorarium for their efforts. All articles will be published alongside a short biography and a photograph of the author.

Submissions due Monday, March 29, 2010.
