Calling on Internationally Trained Journalists and/or Writers living in Canada

New Voices is a publication of the Mennonite New Life Centre that connects readers to the perspectives and voices of writers new to Canada. Our contributors, internationally trained journalists and writers, explore the political and social factors that affect the lives of immigrants and refugees. They expose injustices and propose solutions. We invite you to join us. New Voices is currently recruiting writers for our Winter 2010 issue. This issue will focus on issues of Equity and Access, and will ask the question, “Are we losing ground?”. Selected writers will be assigned a story on one of the following specific topics:

• Immigration Policy;

• Gender Equity;

• Employment Equity Legislation;

• Political Participation and Activism;

• Mental Health and Ethnic Groups.

In their stories, writers will ask—and respond to—the question: “Are we losing ground with regards to access and equity?” We will support contributors to identify research sources, including potential interviews. Writers may use different writing/journalistic styles such as news, opinion and creative writing.

All selected writers will receive a small honorarium for their work. Contributors will need to attend an initial planning meeting and to work closely with a professional editor to prepare their articles for publication. Articles will be printed beside a short biography and photograph of the author.

New Voices is widely distributed through community organizations and non-profit organizations.

This is an excellent opportunity for newcomer journalists/writers interested in social justice and politics who would like to see their work published in Canada.
